How to play Backgammon

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Backgammon. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
