How to play Peg Solitaire

Open Peg Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
